Best AI governance tools for finance teams

Once finance uses AI for coding, reconciliations or forecasts, auditors and regulators want to see what AI is running, who approved it and what controls sit over it.

Two of these tools are company-wide platforms that register every AI system and map it to rules like the EU AI Act.

One puts AI governance next to SOX testing, one governs the accounting agents built inside its own close software, and one suits banks and insurers whose models go through model risk review.

1IBM watsonx.governance

IBM (NYSE: IBM). ibm.com

AI governance software that keeps an inventory of AI models, agents and use cases, links them to risks, controls and regulations, and monitors them in production.

Best for

Large companies that want AI governance tied to an existing GRC program.

What it does

  • Shadow AI detection to find unmanaged and unapproved AI use across the organization.
  • Policy enforcement, obligation mapping and compliance evidence capture across teams, models and AI workflows.

AI features

AI governance graph
A connected map of AI assets, risks, controls and policies. IBM said at Think 2026 it is coming in the second half of 2026.

Connects to

Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, IBM OpenPages, AWS Marketplace.

Pricing

Trial: free 14-day instance.

Watch out for

Risk & Compliance plans start with one concurrent user and one module, so giving finance, risk and audit staff access means paying for more users, modules or instances.

2Credo AI

Credo AI (private). credo.ai

AI governance platform for registering AI use cases, models, agents and vendors, scoring their risk and mapping them to policies and regulations such as the EU AI Act, NIST AI RMF and ISO 42001.

Best for

Companies that need one register of AI use cases and a review process for AI vendors, including financial firms.

What it does

  • AI Registry for use cases, models and vendors, with shadow AI discovery.
  • Risk scoring, audit trails and reporting.

AI features

Govern AI Assistant (GAIA)
Generally available since 13 May 2026. Drafts use case descriptions and metadata from uploaded documents and helps fill in intake questionnaires.

Connects to

Microsoft, IBM, Databricks.

Pricing

Not published.

Watch out for

A January 2026 review by Openlayer, a competing vendor, says Credo AI centers on policy documentation and lacks built-in real-time guardrails and automated behavioral tests, and relies on outside integrations for runtime enforcement.

3Optro AI Governance (formerly AuditBoard)

Optro, Inc. (formerly AuditBoard; owned by Hg). optro.ai

GRC platform, called AuditBoard until March 2026, that began as SOX compliance software and now covers internal audit, controls, risk, compliance and AI governance.

Best for

Finance, internal audit and SOX teams that already test controls in AuditBoard or Optro and want AI governance in the same system.

What it does

  • Inventory of every model, agent and third-party AI app from intake to production, with ownership, data inputs and risk classification.
  • More than 25 pre-mapped frameworks including the EU AI Act, ISO 42001 and NIST AI RMF, with harmonized controls so one piece of evidence covers several requirements.

AI features

Optro AI agents
Agents trained on GRC work that collect evidence and map risks with a person approving the result. On the AI governance product they review evidence and flag what is valid, partly valid or missing.

Connects to

AWS, Microsoft Azure, Jira, Snowflake, ChatGPT, Claude and Copilot (via MCP server).

Pricing

No prices published.

Watch out for

AI governance is a newer part of a platform built around SOX and audit; Optro says it was strengthened by the 2025 FairNow acquisition, so ask for references that use it for AI specifically.

4FloQast GenAI Governance Framework

FloQast (private). floqast.com

A governance module inside FloQast, the close and accounting automation platform, aligned to COSO's guidance on internal control over generative AI.

Best for

Controllers and accounting teams that build AI agents for the close in FloQast and must show auditors those agents sit under SOX controls.

What it does

  • Pre-built AI risk and control matrix (AI-RCM) to start from and tune.
  • Live inventory where FloQast Transform agents appear as soon as they are built.

AI features

COSO GenAI Module
Announced 16 September 2026 as coming soon: risk assessment, control environment and activities, and monitoring for AI agents, with audit evidence passed to FloQast Connected Compliance.

Connects to

NetSuite, SAP, Workday, Microsoft, Sage Intacct, Xero.

Pricing

No prices published.

Watch out for

It governs AI agents built in FloQast, not AI across the whole company, and the COSO GenAI Module was still described as coming soon in September 2026.

5ModelOp

ModelOp (private). modelop.com

AI lifecycle and governance software, sold as the Enterprise AI Command Center, that keeps the system of record for machine learning, generative AI, agentic and vendor AI.

Best for

Banks, insurers and other regulated firms with model risk teams.

What it does

  • One system of record for every model, solution and agent, with automated lifecycle workflows.
  • Portfolio views of AI cost, tokens, risk and ROI.

AI features

ModelOp AI Delivery Engine (MADE)
Connects to more than 50 technologies, automates workflows and lets agents plug into the AI lifecycle.

Connects to

AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, OpenAI, MLflow, ServiceNow, Jira, Databricks, Snowflake, Power BI, Tableau.

Pricing

Not published.

Watch out for

ModelOp's SR 11-7 page still presents SR 11-7 as the bank model risk guidance, but the Federal Reserve, OCC and FDIC replaced it with SR 26-2 on 17 April 2026, so check that its regulatory mappings are current.

Which one fits

  • You want published prices and governance tied to an enterprise GRC tool

Pick IBM watsonx.governance. It is the only tool here with list prices, and IBM pairs it with OpenPages for finance, risk and audit teams.

  • Business units keep buying AI tools and you need to review the vendors

Pick Credo AI. Mastercard uses its AI Registry and Vendor Registry to keep generative AI use cases under one governance process.

  • Internal audit already runs SOX testing in AuditBoard

Pick Optro AI Governance (formerly AuditBoard). AI inventory and framework mapping sit in the same platform as controls testing, with 25+ frameworks pre-mapped.

Questions to ask in a demo

  • Can you show the full audit trail for one AI action, from the prompt or input to the person who approved it?
  • How do you link an AI system to the SOX controls that rely on it, and what evidence does an external auditor get?
  • How do you find AI tools that finance staff use without approval, including features inside our ERP and SaaS apps?
  • When a rule changes, as SR 11-7 did in April 2026, how fast do your framework mappings update and who checks them?

Where ChatFin fits

ChatFin is one of the AI agent products a finance team would put under these controls. Its agents draft journal entries and accruals, a person approves before anything posts to the ERP, and every action is logged for audit.

Its Compliance AI module tracks SOX controls, expense policies, vendor limits and approval thresholds and flags exceptions inside finance work. It does not inventory models or manage AI policy across the company, which is the job of the tools above.

How we chose

We picked five tools for the job and checked every capability, integration and price on the vendor's own pages on 16 October 2026, or on a filing or news report. Figures are the vendors' own claims unless noted.

We looked at ten tools and kept the five with a clear link to finance, SOX, audit or model risk. One was dropped because its pages would not load, one because its AI governance page is written for privacy and security teams, and one because we could not confirm AI governance features.

Two were not researched in depth.
